1984

The sound of technology in 1984 was pretty awesome, but I’ll let the audio speak for itself. This ad ran on Q102 in 1984. Enjoy!

Would any of you kind folks be able to help date the set of photos this one came from? You, you’re awesome. Happy Monday!

Brian May, in stereo?

Who? you might ask. He was the guitar player for British rock band Queen, turned PhD from Imperial College in London, turned curator of stereoscopic photography. Talk about a renaissance man. I feel it is my duty as an archivist to share his book with you. That, and I love stereoscopic photography.

HuffPo article about Brian May

“At college, May was near enough to Christie’s to begin to build some expertise. He discovered the work of one “TRW”. To his great good fortune, learned that T.R. Williams was perhaps the most poetic photographer of the 1850s. Eventually, he rounded up a vast collection of these nearly forgotten images.

What Williams had done, May realized, was to freeze a small village in a magical moment — instead of reading about it in a novel by Thomas Hardy, you could almost literally visit it. That is, with the help of a viewer, you could feel yourself in the scene. And what a scene: a rural idyll, five minutes before the train comes to town, and mass literacy, and industrialization.”

As I flipped through the Amazon.com “look inside” feature for his book, reading his thoughtful introduction, I came across an image of Brian May and his white-gloved hands demonstrating proper photo handling. A rock star teaching the world about preservation! (Sort of.) The next thing you know, Old Spice Guy will be selling us on the idea of libraries. (And a reasonable facsimile here.)

Oh my!

In other “wish I was a librarian” news:
Secret. Vatican. Archives. Go ahead and let that sink in…
The pope wanted to be a librarian too!
Yeah, we’re that awesome!

Facial Hair Friday!

Admit it, you love it. And why not really? History is fun. Friday is fun. Archivists are a LOT of fun.

The Prologue blog from the National Archives has this mustache to share today:

“It’s a nineteenth-century twist on six degrees of separations–except Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren isn’t connected to Kevin Bacon. Along with his mustache and soul patch, he’s two degrees of separation from the Brooklyn Bridge.”

His connection to Roebling means he is a few degrees of separation from Cincinnati, right? As you all know, our Roebling suspension bridge was designed by the same John Roebling of Brooklyn Bridge fame.

This is why we do what we do here. The history of Cincinnati State doesn’t just belong to us. It is part of the story of Cincinnati. This city’s history wouldn’t be complete without our story, just like the story of Ohio would be incomplete without the story of Cincinnati, and so on. So you see, the history of this college up on the hill is world history. Feel important now? You should.

See? History is fun!

Multimedia explosion of excitement!

This is a thrilling Thursday internet friends!  We have audio and video capabilities on the blog–and I have some pretty great stuff to share with you.  I’ll start you off with a little taste, which also happens to be my favorite file, and will soon be my new ringtone.  I wonder if I can make this available as a ringtone you can download to your phone.  I will look into that. Until then, try not to wear out the blog listening to this over and over again.

(Give it about 10 seconds to get going.)

Enjoy!

Friday Facial Hair!

I know you have been waiting patiently for this. I was out of the office last Friday, enjoying a weekend in facial hair-free Charlotte, and was unable to post. I will correct that now with a double mustache for you pleasure. Also, I must insist you mosey over to the National Archives blog for some of their FFH–Uncle Walt is making an appearance!

Jerry Springer says “Hi”

Who could forget Jerry Springer right? We have quite a few pictures of him, and a few other famous people too, over on our flickr page. The Jerry Springer set has a fun little Where’s Waldo sort of game happening too. See if you can spot the Nirvana t-shirt in nearly all of the photos.
