It’s that time again…

$31 a credit hour? Wow!
Keep an eye out for our next exhibit on the history of co-op at Cincinnati State. We will be announcing it soon!
I feel like the ladies are left out of Fridays, and Mondays are a little blah in general so I thought I would brighten your day with a little fashion. The past is prologue as they say, and this couldn’t be more true of fashion. It seems we are bound to repeat the trends of our youth every 20 years or so. Leg of mutton sleeves and shoulder pads lingered for a while and then went away, and many of us thought they were done for. I can remember my mother cutting them out of all her shirts when I was little. Ah, fashion. You give us something to spend our money on and then regret later. Punky Brewster was a style icon for me when I was growing up, if that gives you any idea of how I must looked. You’ll have to use your imagination as all photographic evidence has been destroyed.
Well, the good news is: the broad shoulder look is back ladies! Check out this 80s inspired selection from current fashion shows on New York Magazine here!
And feel free to add your favorite (or least favorite) trend from your youth in the comments section!
Here is a rather distinguished looking gentleman for you this fine Friday afternoon. I think the pipe comes with that particular style of beard. They may even be attached. Can anyone help me identify this man perhaps?
Happy Friday!
Since we are opening a new chapter in Cincinnati State’s history with the appointment of a new president, I thought I would share a slide show featuring all of our past leaders. Welcome Dr. Owens!
Visit the slideshow for all images!
As you might suspect, we have a lot of pictures of food in the collection. Some dishes I can identify, but as to some I can only guess. I recognize the fellow in the middle from the last time I ate at Riverside (delicious!). Can anyone tell me what the other dishes are? And maybe share some memorable meals in the comments section too?
I had sushi today. Your turn!
This took some doing but I finally have some video to share you fine history fans out there. Behold–1988!
Pretty rad, right?
Today I have a handsome mustache for your pleasure, and better still: a bottle of wine. I am new here so I have to ask–are there still wine parties? And if so, when can I expect my invitation?
Careful with that though, as this week’s facial hair from the National Archives teaches us, too much drinking can get you and your mustache locked up for a while.
Happy Friday!
One thing about this document I would like to point out, and I’m not sure how well it comes through on the scanned image, is how we can see the process of the document’s creator. See if you can tell where text was cut out and taped onto the page, the white-out and the actual clip art taped on. This is something we don’t see as much of in more recent collections in our archives. Maybe this doesn’t seem like such a loss to researchers in a collection of newsletters, but think of how much we can learn about an author from their writing process. Imagine if Dickens had composed everything on his MacBook. We wouldn’t have this (a really marvelous interactive look at changes made in A Christmas Carol). I can’t imagine surviving college without a computer, but I do wonder how losing process as evidence will change our reading of history in the future.
For now, you can find me in the pool. Not really. I’m glad it’s not 1843–air conditioning was a grand invention. See you on Friday with some facial hair–on the blog that is, not on me.
We are pleased to announce the arrival of a new collection to the archives! Photos, recipes, DVDs and clippings from season 1 of The Dish have landed on my desk much to my delight, and are being arranged and described as we speak. The collection should be available to researchers soon.
How exciting!
