Facial Hair Friday!

Looks like I’ve been partial to sideburns lately. I may have to start combing for goatees to spice things up a little. Check out some of the other great photos of Data Processing in 1968 by clicking through this set on our Flickr page. These are all recent additions from the fantastic Michele Imhoff Collection. Have a fabulous weekend folks. And remember, April showers bring May flowers (but why does it have to rain on the weekends?)!

Historypin

I came across Historypin today and had to share it with you.  Historypin is a global social project.  People everywhere can upload their photos to the the Historypin map enabling users worldwide to search locations and view historical images.  Curious about Cincinnati street views both past and present?  Take a look here.  You can change the year to limit your results to a certain era.  Is there something missing from the map that you can contribute?  Get involved! Check out what archives in New York and Philadelphia have contributed so far.

This day in history, and little trivia

Tuesday trivia question: What was the name of Ulysses S. Grant’s horse? Hint: The horse in question was the offspring of a horse named “Lexington”. So why am I posing this question? Today happens to be the sesquicentennial of the start of the Civil War. Check out some civil war photos at the National Archives online.  Also from the National Archives, a video describing the discovery of a trove of Walt Whitman materials.  Did you know that Whitman worked as a clerk in the Department of Justice during the Civil War?

The things we keep, or, What does Jello have to do with espionage?

I read this post yesterday on the Prologue blog by the National Archives and had to share it under my “things we keep” category.  This is the most interesting Jello box I have ever read about, and much easier to store than the bloody door at Miami U that I mentioned some months back.

A little Tuesday trivia for you

Does anyone know what company The Cincinnati Milling Machine (pictured) is now? And for extra credit can you tell me why we would have this picture? Hint: Take a look at our current exhibit. It won’t be around much longer!

Archiving the Web

One of our Facebook friends shared this fascinating article about the efforts of the French to archive the web.  You see, the French have a legal deposit law which mandates that a copy must be preserved of all materials published in France.  As of 2006, this law includes websites.

From the article  A Memory of Webs Past:
“Illien sees himself as a steward of an ancient tradition; he believes he is helping pioneer a revolution in the way society documents what it does and how it thinks. He points out that since the end of the 19th century, the French National Library has been storing sales catalogs from big department stores, including the famous Galeries Lafayette. “Today,” he says, “this exceptional collection…is the best record we have of how people dressed back then and who was buying what.” One day, he insists, the archives of eBay will be just as valuable. Capturing them, however, is a task that’s very different from anything archivists have ever done.”

Should the US have a similar mandate?  Are we doing enough in this country to preserve the documentary history of the internet?
