Spotlight On: Graphic Communications

Since we just started a new term and have welcomed A LOT of new students, I thought I would try out a new feature here. I’ll be featuring photos of students at work in our many different degree programs. When you look at this young man in the Graphic Communications department, think about how changes in technology have changed his field. How has technology impacted your profession?

Happy Wednesday!

I would imagine that this Friday is a welcome end to a short but busy week for most people here. Like the subject of this week’s facial hair, I’m ready to let my hair down this weekend, and I encourage everyone to do the same. The summer is waning fast but there is fun and beer to be had on Fountain square and Mainstrasse in Covington this weekend. So, go forth and enjoy (safely)! Go on, let your hair down. You earned it!

And, I hope everyone had a chance to visit the new exhibit on co-op in the library (our biggest EVER!), and online!

Happy Friday!

Confidence!

So everyone has seen our co-op exhibit in the library by now right? And the slide show online? Right? Well, There’s more! Here is an audio treat for my blog followers–a little extra something to add to your enjoyment of the exhibit:

Confidence:

Finance:

Careers:

I don’t have the exact date on these radio spots but I estimate them to be from the late 80’s.

We are all about co-op here at the college that works!

History is fun, continued: Cartoons!

Lately I’ve been reading a lot about cartoons in archives. Special Collections at Syracuse University has been working on a 2-year NHPRC grant-funded project: “Cartoons and Cartoonists”. This got me looking through our collection for cartoons. Well, Look what I have to share:

These cartoons by student Tom Green were printed in the Tiger Times student newsletter in 1991.

Cartoon collections are often of great use to historians, artists, publishers and collectors. They have so much to say about the culture, politics and society of their time.

Oh, and by the way, remember that robot arm I posted last week? This is the Victorian version of that.

Solved!

Someone solved the slide mystery!
The answer: “That’s a slide of human blood cells. The pale gray objects in the background are red blood cells (erythrocytes). The larger, more colorful cells are white blood cells (leukocytes). The one by the arrow looks like a type of white blood cell called a lymphocyte. The one above it is probably a neutrophil. By the way, all of the cells seen here have been dyed (stained) to make them easier to visualize and identify. Now you know!”
