Alright, so it’s not very much facial hair, but ask yourself this: If he were running for office, would his whiskers affect your vote? Take a look at NARA’s facial hair today too. Would the whiskers have swayed your vote in 1860?

Facial Hair Thursday?

Yes, beloved internet friends. You get your facial hair a day early because I will be away tomorrow at an oral history workshop. Jealous? I figured. Anyhow, these sideburns seem to be making a comeback. I’ll let you know if I spot any in Louisville. This will have to tide you over until Monday. Have a great weekend!

Also, this is too funny not to share: When historians go bad!

Archives around the world!

It is Archives Month and as an archivist I get to celebrate however I like.  Today I would like to share some treats with you from around the world.  Today, from the University of Cambridge, listen to recordings of modern scholars reading ancient Babylonian and Assyrian poetry in the original language. You can hear The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Codex Hammurabi, among other texts, read in languages spoken 4,000 years ago!

Also, fascinating find on CNN: “Blood letting, tobacco smoke blown into the lungs, rum rubs and even the sight of Australia were some of the treatments used – with varying degrees of success – by surgeons of Britain’s Royal Navy to treat patients from the late 1700s to the late 1800s, government records released Friday show.

Britain’s National Archives has cataloged and made available to the public journals and diaries from surgeons who served on ships and in shore installations from 1793 to 1880. The archive represents “probably the most significant collection of records for the study of health and medicine at sea for the 19th century,” said Bruno Pappalardo, naval records specialist at the National Archives.”

And finally, I thought you folks might enjoy a look at some of the hard-working librarians and archivists at Cincinnati State:

We were on display at Books by the Banks this weekend.  What did you do?

Thanks to Karen B for sending in the photo!  (Next time tell that one girl to take her sunglasses off her head!)

A little Thursday trivia

This unidentified photo was taken at a nutrition awareness event on Fountain Square. The photo is undated but appears to be from the 1970s.

I know trivia is meant for Tuesdays traditionally but I came across this photo in our collection and I have to ask if anyone out there knows the answer. Read her sign for the question and post your answer in the comments section. Cite your sources people! This is college after all.

Facial Hair Friday!

This morning at Convocation we heard a wonderful speech from Dr. O’dell M. Owens, our new college president. However, I noticed that something was missing. Not from his presentation mind you, but from his face. We have a fine tradition of presidential facial hair here at Cincinnati State. Perhaps Dr. Owens could be persuaded to put his razor away. Hmmm?

Today’s mustache is brought to you by our dapper retiring president, Dr. John Henderson. Happy retirement Dr. Henderson! Thank you from all of us for your service and commitment to this institution.  We will miss you!

Facial Hair Friday!

Wow! This facial hair is in a tight spot and the solution looks painful. Good thing Oktoberfest is this weekend! Nothing helps me unwind quite like polka music and chicken hats.

Happy Friday!
